Welcome to a The Theater Museum of Vojvodina

THE THEATER MUSEUM OF VOJVODINA

The Theater Museum of Vojvodina was founded on May 6, 1982, for the task of keeping track of this aspect of our cultural assets. It is also intended to gather, protect, preserve, process, study and present the Museum's materials, and to publish data about theater arts and the culture of theater in Vojvodina.

The Museum is the logical continuation of the work of the Theater Department of the Museum of Vojvodina, which was an independent department of the Museum, formed in 1951 after the celebration of the ninetieth anniversary of the founding of the Serbian National Theater (SNT).

The idea of the need for founding a specialized theater museum for Vojvodina came about in 1981 during the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the SNT, when the theater was also moved into its new building. Along with the existing network of theaters and the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad (with its departments for drama, film, music and art), this rounded out the theater-performance and scientific-scholarly totality in the domain of theater arts and culture in Vojvodina.

The holdings of the Museum include more than 60,000 objects (play manuscripts, photographs, playbills/posters, programs, correspondence, artistic works, models, scene and costume design sketches, memoir materials, personal possessions of eminent personalities of the theater, a library, etc.). They are available not only to researchers of the theater and to theater historians, but also to other researchers in the fields of folk culture and the national minorities of Vojvodina.

The Museum puts great effort into exhibiting and publishing, and also into popularizing the dramatic arts.

Since the Museum does not have its own exhibition hall, part of its holdings are presented within the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Vojvodina.
